He was Lieutenant when he first met Lydia in Bodmin, and he became a Captain back in India after Lydia stayed behind with her mother. He returned to England, based at Chatham, in 1830. He married Lydia, had Charles and then soon after they left for India. He died of a fever in 1835, not long after his daughter, Lydia, had died.

He was on St Helena with his Regiment when Napoleon Bonaparte died on 8th May 1821.
