He arrived in Canada on 30 June 1870 aboard the Medway, landing in Quebec. He was a carpenter. He went to Calgary in 1886 working as a builder and by 1894 he and his son Wm Jr. ( b. 1861) had set up a grocery store and butcher shop on Stephen Ave. Four stores in total, eventually opened including a Provision flour store. William Sr. died in 1905 in Calgary, Alberta. he moved to Calgary
